A one-and-half-year-old lion fell into an open well in a farm that belonged to Ghanshyam Vadaiya at Ningala village in Khambha taluka of Amreli district on Thursday.

"We came to know about the incident at around 10:30 am. We rushed to the spot with a rescue team and rescued the lion. It was a one-and-a-half hour operation," Anshuman Sharma, deputy conservator of forest, Gir East, (Dhari), said.

He said that it was a male lion. "Our veterinary team is examining it. After full check-up, we will release it in the wild," Sharma added.

"We have asked the farmers whose wells are open to get them covered to ensure that lions, which are in good numbers in this area, do not fall into them,'' he said.
