As per recent reports, it has been revealed that a bench of Justice KS Radhakrishnan and CK Prasad has given a time of six months to the Gujarat government to move some of the Asiatic lions from Gir Sanctuary to Kuno Palpur wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.
The decision, which is considered to be a setback for the Gujarat Government, the bench has asked the authorities to relocate the lions. The Apex Court ruled out that it is a high time now that lions should move to their second home.
Asiatic lions are at the verge of extinction and seeing their condition, a group of environmentalists had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court. The PIL asked that whether the Asiatic lions should be moved to Kuno Palpur wildlife sanctuary in MP in order to curb the extinction rate of the endangered species.
It was then decided that some of the lions should be moved to Kuno. It has also been revealed that the court has also formed a group of experts who will be deciding the number of lions that need to be moved to Kuno.
"Madhya Pradesh has made adequate arrangements to shift and rehabilitate Asiatic lions and took all steps for their conservation. I hope that the new home will result in enhancement of their population", said Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
