Ahmedabad Newsline               Dt.15-4-2007

Rajkot, April 14: In what appears to be another poaching case, remains of another Asiatic lion were found buried in the forests near Bhandaria village of Bhavnagar district, over 100 km from Gir Wildlife Sanctuary.

While Bhavnagar Collector Pradeep Sharma admitted the remains were that of lion, forest officials said only an FSL report would confirm it. With this, the total number of lions killed since March jumps to seven.

While remains of a lion have been found, a team of police and forest department, which reached the spot on Saturday, did not rule out possibility of more lions being poached in the same area. The matter came to light following interrogation of 30 tribals from Madhya Pradesh who were arrested from the railway station on Thursday. Police have recovered traps, net and pieces of animal hide from the group comprising of four men and women and children.

“Remains like bones have been found at different places in the area near. It has been confirmed they are of lions,” said Sharma.
