Gujarat police arrest 12 suspected poachers from Bhavnagar

Bhavnagar Railway police have arrested 12 persons including six women from the Railway station in connection with poaching in the Gir forest. Police have found with them nets and other material used for poaching in the forests, sources said. However, details investigations will reveal other details about them.

 

Meanwhile with the killings of number of lions in the last two months, Gujarat government has started headcount of lions in the Gir. Generally, the census of lions takes place every five year and the last census was in 2005 in which 359 lions were recorded in the sanctuary, the last abode of Asiatic lions.

 

A senior Forest officer involved in the operations said that it was not regular census, but it was to have estimate of lions in the Gir Forest. The idea of the headcount is to map the locations of the lions so that adequate protection measures could be provided to them, he s
