RAJKOT: In yet another incident of unnatural death of Asiatic lions, about 12-year-old Asiatic lion fell into an open well in Khilavad village in Girgadhda taluka of Gir-Somnath district on Wednesday evening and forest department's rescue team launched rescue operation but lion was already dead in water-filled well. The well was about 30ft deep.

"Preliminary probe suggests that lion may have fallen into an open well while straying around it or chasing pray and drowned into well's water. The dead body was Asiatic lion was brought to Jasadhar animal care center and post-mortem was conducted," said a forest department official. According to latest population estimation of lions, there are 532 lions in Gir forest of Gujarat.

However, many lions have died due to unnatural deaths in and around Gir forests including railway accidents and road accidents.
