CM nod for Task Force to combat poaching menace

Ahmedabad, April 27: After eight lions were killed by poachers in the Gir Lion Sanctuary, the State Government has decided to initiate measures to develop foolproof methods to protect and conserve the country’s wildlife heritage, which has been dwindling continuously.

 

Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced formation of a 7-member Wildlife Protection Task Force that will give advice on the steps to be taken to protect lions from poachers and conserve them. It will submit its report within two months. He also set aside a Rs 40-crore budget for the purpose

 

According to forest department officials, the Task Force will come out with suggestions how to make use of the latest technology for wildlife protection, especially, the Asiatic lions in the Gir sanctuary. The Task Force has also been asked to find out about the kind of training to be given to forest beat guards for keeping a vigil on poachers and protecting lions.

 

It will also study the possibility of use of GPS system and close circuit TV cameras for gathering information against poachers in the forests.
